The Prolotherapy injections we offer at our clinic mean that you no longer have to suffer chronic pain due to degenerative joint conditions, arthritis and sports injuries, This therapy offers the latest in human regeneration technologies making being pain-free possible, without the use of harmful drugs or expensive surgeries.
Prolotherapy, Short for “proliferation therapy, is a recognized orthopaedic procedure providing a nonsurgical treatment which stimulates healing within the musculoskeletal system. It is also known as nonsurgical ligament and tendon reconstruction, or regenerative injection therapy.
The attachment of weakened ligaments and tendons to bone means that the sensory nerves become overstimulated by abnormal tension. This becomes not only the origin of specific local pain, but also areas of referred pain throughout the body. This can reach into the extremities, that is the head, fingers and toes.
The therapy works by stimulating the body’s own natural healing mechanisms to repair injured tissues within the musculosketal system, This involves repeated injections of dextrose solution or other irritating substances into the joint, tendon, or painful tissue. This provokes a regenerative tissue response, by stimulating the production of new bone and fibrous tissue cells.
The treatment originated in the 1930’s when Dr. Earl Gedney, an osteopathic surgeon successfully healed his own severe hand injury with this method.
This treatment permanently strengthens the “weld” that is the joining of, disabled ligaments and tendons to the bone. This occurs due to the stimulation and therefore the production of new bone and fibrous tissue cells. The injections stimulate the body to use its own natural healing mechanisms to repair injured and painful joint areas.
Dr Tran will perform a painless 20 to 30 minute procedure in which concentrated dextrose (sugar water) is injected directly into the site of pain, stimulating a mild, temporary inflammation. This tricks the body into thinking that a new injury has occurred, this induces the growth of new cells. Ligaments and tendons generally have a poor healing. The end result is a reduction or elimination of pain. This usually takes approximately 6-10 weeks to fully appreciate.
